One of the most original TV series now lays a smack down on your Xbox 360 via Xbox Live Arcade tower defense game “Let’s Go!”. The full title of the game is actually listed as “South Park Let’s Go Tower Defense”, which ties nicely into the incredibly racist tirades the Asian voice will throw at you between rounds.
At it’s heart this game is a very basic tower defense game. At first you only have one South Park character to play; Stan. As you progress you unlock the other three kids. In each level you can control all four characters, placing them strategically throughout the levels. Some move faster then others, but Cartman, who obviously moves slower, packs a bigger punch. Using these characters you can build your turrets, each with their own unique characteristics, and cost. All of them are upgradable, and like any good tower defense game, more types of turret become available as you progress and uncover new enemies (eg. cherry bombs to defeat old folk).
The game does have a basic storyline, in that the little town of South Park is under attack from all kinds of horrific groups. Ginger kids, hippies, old people, gnomes, crab people, mongolians and cows. Each enemy has more of a weakness to different types of defense. Snowballs and baseballs do well on gingers while lasers to better against gnomes, etc. Later in the game the maps become more open and you’re free to build (albeit destructible) obstacles – a throw back to Plants vs Zombies, possibly.
As you hurl objects at your foe, each character will have the chance to build up a special ability, each ability being unique to the character traits from the show itself. Stan restores health to the map objects, Cartman creates a fireball that sweeps the stage murdering anyone on screen, or at least weakening them, Kyle improves everyone’s throw with yellow snowballs and love & Kenny steals money from the enemies.
Money is collected at the end of each round, and is topped up for excellent gameplay. As you play through each round, defeated enemies will also drop coins on the map which you should go and collect. The money you have in a round can be spent on building or upgrading turrets, or saved to spend in the next round. Keep in mind, though, each character not in play will automatically lock on and fire on enemies. If an enemy walks into one of your characters they’ll fall down, unable to attack. The only way to heal them is to run over to them, at the risk of hurting two characters!
The game looks fantastic… in a South Park kind of way. Which is to say the game looks fairly rubbish and clip-arty, but it renders in the exact same style as the TV show which makes it feel very authentic. Voice acting is perfect and everyone in the game has a huge amount of hilarious soundbytes to shout mid-game. Surprisingly, tower defense seems to suit the South Park tie-in really well in this case, and is well worth the money you’ll spend on it, and will deliver endless replayability with co-op multi player on Xbox Live (which, granted, when I played was very sparsely populated).
This title is available now on Xbox Live for a mere 800 points, and is worth every last drop of it. Any South Park fan will consider this a must-have, and tower defense fans who are neither ginger or Asian will get a kick out of this.
