It emerged last week that gamer’s in the US of A will have the option of downloading some DLC when they preorder Arkham City from Best Buy. The DLC will allow players to suit up and fight crime with the Boy Wonder himself in the series returning challenge maps. No news on how European gamer’s can get their hands on Robin but for now have a gawk and the newly reveled character model below. Anyone else think he looks a little bit like Eminem?

Mortal Kombat developers Netherrealms studio’s, has stepped up to the plate (admittedly a little late in the game) by waving the need for an online pass in online multiplayer for their latest title. This will only affect PSN users. Mortal Kombat was one of the first game launches to be directly effected by the hacking of the Playstation network almost a month ago. The statement, posted on the games Facebook page reads:

Due to the recent PSN outage, Mortal Kombat for PS3 will now be playable online without need for the Kombat Pass. This is a temporary solution that will only be available while Playstation Store is unavailable. Once PlayStation Store is back up, users will be able to enter the Kombat Pass code included with Mortal Kombat or purchase a Kombat Pass for $9.99

Brian over at Kotaku seems to think so. Personally I think it looks a little shabby, if I was a Loki style master trickster, I think with at mix between the ‘shadowy’ Black Ops cover and the ‘Soldier walking’ MW2 cover I might be able to get the web talking.

Whats the verdict?

Ska Studious follow up to 2009′ Dead Samurai is lovely little side scrolling gore fest with a plot that makes no sense and boss battles filled with more bodily fluid then the oval office during the Clinton Administration.

The game plays like your standard side scrolling beat em up, moving from screen to screen while you character of choice (of which there are two: a crazy lady with a chainsaw for an arm and a space samurai vampire) cleaves up everything and anything that has the bold gumption to blink at you funny. What’s remarkable is the way in which Ska Studios takes the genre and injects so much personality into it. When your not using the quick dash faze move to chop of limbs mid air, they find the time to add brilliant little mini games into the mix which play like Guitar Hero meets The Crow. The game is riddled with Boss Battles which make up for their lack of difficulty early on, by just being super fun and charming… in as much as mountain of gore can be. A cool stream of new weapons and power ups (I love Moon Bread) keeps the combat from feeling stale and the co – op of which I only spent a short time with is well executed (pun intended).

Visually TD:VS is plain awesome. Its influences look to me like early Alex Proyas movies by way of Akira and Blood the last samurai. The cut-scenes don’t have the same impact as the in game stuff but Ska’s penchant for interactive storytelling is a welcome addition and is again very well executed, the games off the wall ‘neo punk’ opening is a fine example of it at its best. If any of this appeals to you then the game is well worth a look. Never taking its crazy cyborg hating story too seriously while still maintaining a thoroughly gruesome and moody atmosphere. Gameplay wise you will spend most of your time wielding sharp and oversized weaponry towards enemies heads with two button attacks and a grab as well as an instant kill which can be pulled off either just as an enemy appears or after you’ve delivered a nice beating. There are some guns thrown in for good measure but once you’ve wielded a giant pair of scissors there’s really no going back to a sub machine gun. The biggest issue I had was with the difficulty, there are times mid game where I just had to stop and walk away. Much like Alien Hominid or Contra/Metal Slug, this game will punish you at times and while some players adore these kinds of experiences I’m just to damn lazy to commit to learning attack patterns which means I end up relying on luck 80% of the time.

Besides all this It plays like a dream, is packed with content and is the most enjoyable XBLA title I’ve played since Limbo although having an off kilter art style is the only similarity the two share. Its a strong package and a lot of fun but it really depends on how strong your love for the genre is. Folks who eat Metal Slug for breakfast will probably feel a unchallenged while casual angels of bullet hell will probably enjoy the game until the challenge gets too intense.
