PS3 modchip
A few months ago original iPhone hax0r George Hotz claimed he had hacked the PS3′s hardware allowing a plethora of custom firmware options to be unleashed. Since then, not much activity has arisen from the hack. The system, it appears, is more locked down then the iPhone or even PSP.
Now a new company has come to market with an apparently working modchip (video below) which allows game data to be stored on local storage (hard disk, external USB drive, etc.). Their wording for the purpose of this is key. Backing up data is not necessarily illegal, so they may just be able to sell this device without requiring Sony’s approval and without getting into a messy legal battle. Despite that, this clearly opens the floodgates for piracy, as “local backup” doesn’t verify the disk image was obtained legally.
It’ll be interesting to see if this actually works, and if it opens the doors to more PS3 hacks.

I wouldn’t mind a feature that allowed me to store games on HDD, I’ve been planning for a while now to replace my “always full” 60GB drive with a 500GB one.
