PSN to charge for 2nd hand gaming?
In a week where we were hit with the news that XBL are increasing costs, now we hear Sony are looking for a new revenue model – the second hand market (which generates all its profit for the retailers, and none for the console makers, publishers or developers). Sony are looking to capitalise on online gamers by charging them to play second hand games online – a move likely to anger bargain hunters, but one that has it’s thought process deeply rooted in the fact that bottom line developers get nothing from traded game sales, which is huge business.
This comes after Andrew House said Sony are looking to add revenue models which add content to games for a fee – kind of like FIFA10 Ultimate Team, and Bobby Kotick said a revenue stream could be created with a subscription based Call of Duty online mode.
