Retro Review: Final Fantasy VI

Hey everyone….

My first Review here. I hope it goes well :D

So, This is the scene.

Im a young kid, 11-12, and my favourite game is Final Fantasy VII. Im covinced its the best game in the world, and i hate anyone who begs to differ. I play all the New FF games and love them… I thought ‘Im not playing the original’s, they suck

……If I went back in time and met myself, I would slap me and say ‘No! Bold! You get In there and You Play Final Fantasy Fucking VI RIGHT NOW!!!!’

Yep, I was a massive fanboy of the new age Final Fantasy’s, I was the thing so many Internet geeks hate so much and wont stop complaining over. Cloud was cool, Barret was cool, Tifa was hot man!! I was a ‘Hardcore Gamer YEEEAAAHHH!!!’
(Epic Sarcasm)

Let’s find out why I hate myself 5 years ago…..

Ladies and Gentlemen, Welcome to the most Epic Final Fantasy of all time….

Final Fantasy VI

Platform: Super Nintendo, Playstation (1999), Game Boy Advance (2007)
Released: 1994
Squaresoft

Final Fantasy VI was the Sixth (duh) installment of the popular, but underground, jrpg Final Fantasy. It was released as ‘Final Fantasy III outside of Japan. Nearly 4 million copies of Final Fantasy VI have been sold.

Lets look at it from a few different aspects…

Story:

*spoiler alert*

1000 years ago, The War of the Magi almost destroyed the world. Magic is extinct and the world has reached a new revolution around Machinery and Technology. When A Mysterious Woman named Terra is found by a group of Rebel’s known as the Returners, She joins them against the oppresion with other’s such as Locke, Celes, Gau, Strago and Mog!!! She soon discovers that she herself is Half Human, Half Esper. The Espers were magical beings of power that were secluded from the world after the War of the Magi.

They soon find out that the Empire is using Espers to extract their power and use it via Magicite. The Man Behind this is Kefka, a demonic Human who is twisted, Evil and Vile. The Empire disturbs the Espers so much that Terr and the gang go to where the Espers gate was sealed, and accidently unleash the Espers on the world.

The Empire discover that 3 statues contain the power of the world. The Emperor himself wants to use this power to rule the world, But Kefka has other plans. He kill the Emperor and Moves the Statues, thus causing a Cataclysm on the Earth, leaving a dying planet on the Brink of Extinction in its wake.

1 year later, Celes wakes up and starts looking for her friends. She Learns that Kefka has taken control of the World and is destroying it town by town with his ‘Light of Judgement’ After reuniting with all her old friends, Celes and the Others storm Kefka’s tower, where the Final Battle takes place.

Pretty awesome, I know…….

Gameplay:

FFVI see’s the return of the ever popular ATB gauge. Turn based Battling never felt so good. Each charachter has his or her own specific Ability’s. Call it Job’s if you like, No charachter is the same, making the Gameplay Inticate. As RPG’s go, The Combat is smooth, the leveling is fair and the amount of available choice is stunning.

Learning Magic is done by Magicite, with which a charahter can equip to him or herself. The magicite allows you to summon a creature in battle. In battle, various Magic points are obtained. These go toward a ceratin spell and when enough are obtained, the spell is learned for life.

The World is comprised of Dungeons, Towns, Cave’s, City’s and other accesible area’s such as the Colloseum. The Chocobo makes a return and so does the airship. These two means of alternate transportation push the SNES’s Mode 7 graphics to the limit and leave a nice taste in your mouth.

Along with Battling, RPGing and Customizing, there are various Side Quests. Some offer you the chance to obtain new charachters while others have a hidden esper at the end of it.

Music:

Nobuo Uematsu provides a soundtack that some argue is the greatest in any Video Game EVER!!! Definetly some of his best work, The Legendary composer draws on inspiration from different emotions, the main one being Love. The Opera scene in Final Fantasy VI is the most memorable of the Game, and the song is stuck in our minds for the rest of our lives.

Other pieces include Fan Favourite, Terra

and my personal favourite, Dancing Mad

Its amazing that the simple technology of MIDI’s were able to give us an experience that most Orchestral pieces fail to do….

Graphics:

For The SNES, The Graphics are Incredible. Taking full advantage the MODE 7′s graphical power, It mad the Sprites bigger, The World larger and the Animation Prettier. Yoshitako Amano and Tetsuya Nomura were able to create charachters and make them look stunning!! Even Playing this game on the PS1, it still looks a lot better than many other PS1 games….

Overall Score:

4.7/5

For gamers who hate grinding, they will have a hard time getting to the Final Boss. The Difficulty of the later stages of the game can put people off, especially the Final Dungeon…

Final Fantasy VI is my favourite Final Fantasy, and one of my favourite games EVER!!!! If you like current Gen Final Fantasy, WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR!!!!

Fuck a Final Fantasy VII remake!!! VI deserves a remake wwaayy more… Especially due to the fact that its not as popular as other Final Fantasy’s!!!

Thanks for reading, and Peace…..

No Problem at all, Diversity is Important :D

  4. Terra_corrupt /

I would Reccomend the DS version of IV and maybe V aswell if you can find it for the GBA :D

  5. retroboy /

wow… great review. the music brings the memories back!

  6. Welcome Terra_Corrupt great start!

  7. This could possibly be my 2nd favourite FF game but I have a hard time choosing. FFIV was also great and good to see it remade on the DS. I'm sure VI will come to DS soon enough.
I think the level grinding can become an issue but like an FF game, you should do the sidequests these help the monotony.
I'm not surprised that for many people FFVII was their first as I wasn't really aware of FF series in the UK until then.
I do love the series and really looking forward to FFXIII.

Terra have you played FF Tactics, as I recently finished that and I have to say it holds up extremely well for a game over 10 years old.

  8. Terra_corrupt /

Truth be Told, Tactics looks cool, but Im not a fan of Tactical RPG Grid style games… But who know, I might like it :D

  9. Terra_corrupt /

    Thank You :D

  10. Terra_corrupt /

Aye. The Music is Unforgetable :D

  11. Either was I or perhaps I'm still not, I dont play any other type of grid based game but I guess it was the highly polished finish Square managed to put on it that made me warm to it. It's worth a try, I'd advise the PSP remake if you do.
