Despite common consensus im still alive! But sadly thanks to lots of work I haven’t got a chance to play many games in the last while. I couldn’t help it, however, when lego rockstar arrived at my door. Lets get the “lego games are for kids” out of the way first. I’ll put that somewhere. Maybe somewhere dark.

So in my own experience lego games have been very alike. The same formula for all. Each new game never really breaks any ground compared to the last. The one thing each game has though is a childish fun about it. Lego characters can break the mould, they add to the cut-scenes of the franchises they so happily parody (see here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TE7n25Qzcsc). So picking up lego rockband seemed promising.

On startup you’re treated with a lego rendition of the rockband startup video, complete with a lego tyrannosaurus and extreme lego hairdos. The menus are made to perfectly mimic all of rock bands’ while making the “cool” designs seem comical (lego tigers are just funny). Upon setting up a band (the undefeated wiggles if you must know) you’re taken to your bands hangout which allows the usual free-play,tour etc as well as recruiting roadies and other entourage members. You can buy new vans, helicopters, boats and all other crafts in order to get to gigs.Essentially, this is a rock bat cave.

Gameplay is exactly whats to be expected from a rockband game. A constant stream of lego bricks move towards you, you react in time and press, or miss and swear loudly. Nothing particularly new here. I should point out that a new difficulty deemed “super easy” has been created. Sadly id rather walk barefoot on lego bricks before subjecting myself to it. One thing which has been added here are end of gig rounds where the “power of your rock” is used to defeat an enemy. These boss battles are actually really fun, with different band members taking turns to shred. These range from blowing up a building to defeating a disgruntled octopus and finally, in my favourite part of the game, playing the ghostbusters theme to vanquish a ghost army back to hell. I stress: this was on equal par with beating that dragonforce song during the credits of GH3.

Everything else is mirrored straight from rockband. The setlist is ok,with some pretty good songs interspersed with some of the most terrible ones (<cough>incubus<cough>). Theres the ability to win random lego animals which inhabit your lair. To be honest im not really sure why this was added.

So all in all lego rockband was a great game. Its great fun like all the rest of these games with a bit of an added bonus of some humor which takes the over zealous rockers in us back down to earth. The setlist could use some work but since DLC can be imported from normal rockband games i guess that saves it a bit. And the greatest perk of the game? playing as a lego freaking freddie mercury!

4/5 because the playlist isn’t the greatest but can be remedied.
