10 reasons why Modern Warefare 2 is one to avoid
Jumping into my shoryuken-ified emails and trawling the internet for some inane entertainment or pictures of cats, there’s simply no way for me to escape the impending release of Activisions number one cash-cow, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. Most people shorten that to MW2; me? COD6, just to remind myself of just how many iterations of the same stuff we’re going through.
Next week this game is released, and publisher and developer alike want this game to be the biggest media event of the year. TV spots, internet spoofs and general gaming-industry fodder will dominate the next few days. They want to make Halo 3s campaign look like a campaign for Always Ultra tampons (useless for men, but always on TV when men are watching).
Call of Duty 4 is a game I hold close. I loved that game. I would want to have, I poured blood, sweat and tears into all versions of it (yes, even that disgraceful DS port). I watched a man install various editions of Windows on a small PC rack, just to make sure it installed COD4 effectively. And by editions, I not only refer to the “flavours” of XP and Vista, but the various plethora of languages too. I sat in a room with two men until the early hours of the morning trying to figure out how to get a laptop from that sniper mission at the ferris wheel (the one where the alternate doors open). Yep, I was a QA tester on that title.
And so, a few years later, more angry, bearded and wordy then I was back then – I give you my 10 reasons not to bother with the sequel, in no particular order of preference…
10. This is COD4, and WAW… only with new missions and a few graphical notches here & there. How did a map pack and patch end up costing €65, far above the average RRP of a game?
9. No dedicated servers for PC gamers. Remember when PC gamers were the bread & butter of this franchise? “Fuck ‘em, we’ve invented some mumbo jumbo tech to let the USERS use THEIR bandwidth to host the games thus saving US money!”
8. Battlefield always managed to have 64 men in one game, really well (on the PC). So how in the name of God, in an era when PC gaming is dominated by the ActiBlizzard title World of Warcraft, and shooters regularly feature 32 or 64 player battles, did Infinity Ward decide to go about and deliver a 9v9 experience? That’s barely multiplayer these days. Abandoned IRC chatrooms have more players then that…
7. PC gamers get more goodies. Undoubtedly a lot of developers pick up staff from the mod community. Some decent mods came about from COD games in the past. COD6? Nope. Don’t dare touch their engine, bitch. You’re not even getting a command-line console, either!
6. For a realistic military shooter that takes pride in managing to be accurate in terms of weapons, storyline and setting, why are they going with the cheap and gimmicky tactic of selling overpriced plastic in a special edition box? Really, do people need Night Vision Goggles, branded ones at that? Are people planning on not paying their ESB bills and using this to get around the house at night?
5. Spoiler alert: There’s a space level. A fucking space level. I know they’re trying to suck people away from Halo on xbox live, but seriously… get a grip!
4. Bobby Kotick… here’s a quote from the CEO of Activision, “The goal that I had in bringing a lot of the packaged goods folks into Activision about 10 years ago was to take all the fun out of making video games.” Awesome.
3. The fact that people critique EA for releasing yearly sports titles like Madden, Major League Baseball or FIFA when Activison do the exact same thing. Turning Call of Duty into another Tony Hawk. Look out for some sort of ridiculous plastic peripheral in 2010.
2. Activision say they want this to be the biggest media release of the year. How about you spend money on servers and a properly new title from IW instead of a map pack/patch update. Spend the money in the right place, where gamers want it.
1. Most annoyingly, and the worst reason on this list? The fact that no matter what I do, say, try or believe – you, me and everyone else will end up buying this game either way.

Yeah, I'm going to get it but I got sick of the multiplayer pretty fast last time.same with WAW. Activision are quickly becoming the new Third Reich of publishers, bring on Bad Company 2 for a much much better multiplayer experience.
In fact save you money right now, go buy BC for 16 quid in game – online is still brilliant and games are still packed. I guess we should be grateful we ain't getting a 5 hour campaign and multiplayer experience without matchmaking
Everyone has good memories of COD4 myself included, though I skipped WAW.
Since I will be getting this for console, i'm not too fussed about the dedicated servers and command line console being missing.
price is hefty mind!!
Yes it is pretty hefty indeed, Its killing me not to be getting Dragon Age this weekend but I can't afford the two of them in a week.
It's a moral delima – Activision are such evil bastards but saying that, there is the argument that we are all one conscious experiencing itself subjectively. It is only our illusion that we are separate from god there is no such thing as evil because there is only love so we should just buy the game and enjoy it………………sorry I blacked out there for a minute.
the hardened edition is £69.99 here !!
xmas ruining decent prices once again
stupid post
Technically your spoiler isn't a spoiler anymore, since the space mission makes a cameo in the latest trailer.
Also, I will still probably get it for the console, although not immediately. Definitely not getting it for the PC since they've screwed it up and lowered the multiplayer to the same level as the console…
Constructive.
Well some people will still avoid the trailer, but yeah – everyone knows at this stage. still, for posterity I'll leave it there
Gah just found out I can't get the day off Tuesday because of stoooopid training. Blows.
yoyomommna – Good point,well made
Hmmm, not so sure i agree here…
Now ill admit, FPS games usuallly seem unnapealing to me, but COD4 introduced a level of Depth, Experience and, most Importantly, Surealism. I had'nt felt that in a long time. MW2's Space level looks really Interesting, and it was good for Infinity ward to step back and say ''you know what, Its a game, lets get crazy!''…
The Leaked Footage, on the other hand….. Well, I just say Why? Why do something thaht would spark Contreversy In a World so hair-triggered by Terrorism and Video Game Violence. 10 years ago, grand… but now, it just seems a bit 'Whoa' to me…. but, Its sureal, so…..
Oh, by the way, Im fully aware that i capatalize badly
