They don’t prepare you for this in fake video game journalism school. How can you love a game and hate it in equal measure? What do you score such a monstrosity? Everything I hold dear screams out at me to hate it but when I’m knee deep in a co op firefight I got’s a smile on my face from ear to ear.
If you have ever played an MMO or maybe even a Diablo game and enjoyed its levelling up mechanic and its subtle way of making open world gameplay strangely linear, then you are going to love borderlands. This game was made for you, its like the plot of Strange Weird Science only instead of a hot bird you get your favourite gameplay mechanic melded with an FPS.
There really isn’t anything else to get from Borderlands, the story is there but only in faint whispers. The worlds are baron apart from the odd NPC and hordes of respawning dog things and enemies that all look the same. The vehicle combat is fun but only really in co op and character development is down to a bunch of numbers. Then why did I sink 10+ hours into it at the weekend? Cus its really f*cking fun, people dropping in an out to help and gun play thats the right mix between COD and Halo are some of the reasons why. It looks pretty for the most part and weapons kick ass.
The fair scorer in me gives this about 3/5 but this games target audience are going to see it as a 5 star experience, those gamers who can’t get a thrill bigger then finishing a mission with 4 friends and splitting the loot at the end with a big guffaw followed by pats on asses. So I’m not going to judge or put a score on something that’s obviously going to split a lot of people down the middle. That’s what you can expect around here folks, we pay for our games. We give as honest as we can and I honestly can’t mark this game good/bad or in the middle. Maybe that’s the biggest compliment 2K can get for their peculiar little beast? Who knows. This one is like being asked to recommend a holiday destination, I know I had a great time there but whose to say you will?
# Edit: Ok after a few more weeks of tipping away at skags I have decided a 3/5 is a fair score for this title. Look forward to the sequel and for a hopefully deeper experience.

Interesting. I bought Borderlands because I'm actually not sure what it is, or what to expect. But because of that it hasn't actually gone into my console yet.
