Broken Steel Review
So with this recession hitting everyones pockets including mine I thought people would be more inclined to play cheaper downloads instead of forking out 50 euros for a new title. So I chose Broken Steel, the third add on for the great Fallout 3. Unlike the other add ons this one actually continues from the main story placing you in the Citadel of The Brotherhood of Steel two weeks after the Project Purity mission in the original game.
Broken Steel actually raises you’re level capacity to 30 from 20 so if you’re thinking of playing any of the add ons I would advise you play this one first. The main quests are broken into three missions – Death from Above, Shock Value and Who Dares Wins, all progressing in difficulty. The first mission sees you and a number of your bretheren from The Brotherhood of Steel raiding an Enclave base and retrieving a piece of equipment for your officer.
You will also be accompanied by Liberty Prime, a huge robot constructed by The Brothers which actually gets destroyed by an arial attack at the beginning of the mission. You will be then ordered to enter the base with some soldiers and clear out any Enclave that are left. Death from Above is designed to lure you into a false sense of security as it is by far the easiest mission of the three. Basically The Brothers will do all the work while you tag along.
After completeing you first assignment you will recieve orders to retrieve a fusion coil wich is located half way across the map. Heres where it gets difficult. Travelling there itself throws up all kinds of dangers. You will be attacked by all sorts of creatures and monsters throughout the baron wilderness. This is where I found the Animal perk comes in handy. Depending on what level you are you can choose to upgrade this perk and animals will simply not attack. Upgrade it a second time and they will fight on your side excluding other animals.
Upon entering the sewers you will have to fight Deathclaws in abundance. Making sure you have enough health upgrades and ammo is essential ans they will rip you asunder on sight if you’re not prepared. You will continue through a derelict building fighting yet more monsters and Enclave until, eventually you find the coil. Bring it back to the Citadel and the mission is over.
You’re next orders for the final mission, Who Dares Wins, are to enter the Enclave military base and upload co-ordinates on their own computer terminal to blow up the base. Sounds simple but the base is crawling with heavy flame and other lethal classes of Enclave. My prefferred option here was to sneak or simply run like hell to each objective in the hope you find some medical boxes or sinks (or toilets!) to drink from to regain your health. When you eventually reach the terminal (and well bloody done if you did!) theres a choice of blowing up the Citadel or the Enclave base. I’m a loyal Brother of Steel so I chose the latter. I was then escorted via aircraft back to the Citadel where I received great adulation to my appreciation and relief.
After the main missions are complete there are three optional side missions allowing you to level up even more. This download is a mere 10 euro and for my money is well worth the purchase. Fallout 3 did’nt receive Game of the Year for no reason and Broken Steel is a continuation of its brilliance. Extremely challenging but rewarding, it delivers to every gamers needs. Definitely one of the best value for money game add ons out there. Forget about those new releases, save yourself alot of money and immerse yourself in The Brotherhood of Steel and bring down The Enclave! Fantastic.
