Football Genius Review

Aug 04, 10 Football Genius Review

I imagine this one is going to be for the football nut/gamers of our time and God knows theres a lot of you.  Myself – not a major soccer enthusiast but I’ll try to get on the whole beautiful game level while reviewing this game.  First off it does what it says on the tin – its a football quiz.  Single and online modes and thats it.  Single player mode allows you to choose between half time and full time which just determines the lenght of time you will be quized.

First time you play it you will be given a quick explanation of how to conduct each round so pay attention because you wont see this again, although theres no explanation needed really as the rounds are pretty simple.  The first is always a straight question round where you have a multiple choice of answers.  A timer will tick down which determines how quick and how many points you score for answering correctly.

If you answer incorrectly you will be deducted points but you can never go below zero (which was about my average score).  Trouble with this title is, and I would say its the same if you are a soccer brain, its just not that substantial.  After the quick fire questions the rounds dont really vary.  Most of them just consist of a blurred picture slowly coming into focus with the player stopping it then answering a question on it.

What team is this?  Which player is this?  What year was this picture taken?  How many goals did he score in this game etc etc.  One variant is a round with a rotating football with football faces on it which requires the player to stop when a matching name appers.  Its really one of those games you have to get a few mates and beers in to have any fun at all.  Its all about beating your friend’s high score.

Theres a few snazzy animations in between rounds which does give it a slick and professional feel. But apart from that it just feels void of any decent stimulation.  So really unless you’re a major soccer fanatic theres no other reason to purchase Football Genius (unless you want to get some easy achievements).  On the up side its really the only game of its kind out there.  The only thing I can think to compare it too was 100 to 1 football quiz nights, and they were live and alot more fun.

Online mode is basically single player mode except you match off against an online opponent and first to the buzzer scores more points.  I found the questions to be a sight easier than those that were in 100 to 1.  Theres the odd humdinger but on the whole even I got maybe half the questions correct so if you know your stuff it’ll really boost your ego.  If your ego is football related that is.
