Halo is Bullshit.
…or so says Crysis 2′s lead writer, Richard Morgan, who also doubles up as a handy sci-fi writer in his off time.
In a recent interview the novellist said he thinks the story from Halo is “bullshit”. “I don’t like the Halo at all,” he said, “The reason that its fiction doesn’t work has nothing to do with the fact that you don’t get to see Master Chief’s face, it’s because of lines like ‘Okay … I’m gonna get up there and kill those guys’.”
He went on to lay out why Halo’s characters are bullshit, too, saying “Halo is full of these bullshit archetypal characters” adding that the series has “no real emotional effect.”
He should probably hope Crysis 2′s story and dialog is a lot better then the first Crysis, who had similarly hammy lines thrown into their fictional sci-fi world of an island that somehow never attracts international attention during it’s explosive gameplay, featuring a lead character who never really adds much to a conversation himself. You can read the full Q&A he did here.
“Halo is full of these bullshit archetypal characters”
He could replace the word Halo with any video game title and most tv series/movie title and it would be the same thing.
Thats just the way popular entertainment is; the characterization in Greys Anatomy is on a par with Halo… you except it and move on….unless you’re trying to flog a video game by mentioning how crap the competition is…..
accept…not except..
Im reading the Halo novels at the mo and have to say the story is really deep and compelling.
Win
Apparently the Reach novel is deadly?!
Yeah Im nearly finished The Fall of Reach. Mad what I didnt know about the Forerunners and Spartan 2 Project n shit. Really interesting and detailed stuff. Theres a kind of ‘story so far’ mini doc on the Halo Legends dvd as well. Brilliant stuff.
nice post. thanks.
Halo clearly one of those dividing games, you get the hardcore peeps like the dozen people who kept their xboxs online for 2 weeks playing halo2, or others who think the series is the most overrated game series of the last decade.
I’ve never played any Halo game myself but the numbers of people who are passionate say enough to me that it must have some redeeming features and games aren’t for everyone, some of the best ones always polarise opinion.
