Microsoft: 360 Doesn’t Need Blu-Ray
Either Microsoft are playing for time or they’re just plain crazy. They’re making more claims that digital media is the future and Blu-Ray is already dying. I have a 360 and even I can come to terms with the fact that the PS3 has the better format. Sure, digital media may be the future but it’s way off the mark of becoming the norm.
Microsoft big boy Stephen McGill had this to say on the matter:
“We have no plans to adopt [a] Blu-Ray drive for the Xbox 360. In fact, the future of home entertainment started last autumn when Xbox 360 became the first and only console to offer instant-on 1080p streaming HD movies.”
Well that’s a step forward, but if Microsoft fully believe this, why are there still DVD boxes with Xbox 360 games in them? I honestly think it’s a ridiculous claim to make, but that’s just my opinion … which maybe shouldn’t feature in a news post … anyway, I wonder what Sony will have to say on this one?
I guess the 360 can survive a bit longer on DVD but devs will just have to compress more and cut things out or leave it for DLC. They probably should have made the 360 capable of reading HD-DVD, even if it lost the media race for films it would still be a perfectly good format for game storage. They can’t really force users to buy an add-on just to save you having multiple discs, I’m sure MS will sort this issue in the next console.
Sony’s already made a start with the PSP Go on adopting a digital only medium but everyone can see how that went down so not sure what Microsoft is thinking. 360s can now get 250GB drives which is good (though at a premium) I dont think thats quite enough if you hope to install games and movies, we need something in the TB range.
