Need for Speed

nfs_shift_4_bmp_jpgcopyNeed for Speed is a series that lit up Playstation and Xbox consoles all over the world years ago. These days the series is the jilted, old, haggered uncle that dresses in young people’s clothing and hangs around with his nephews in the hopes of attracting street cred and female attention.

It’s come off quite bad in the wake of Gran Turismo & Forza Motorsport dominating the simulation end of things with uber realistic graphic rendering, all the while Burnout, Midnight Club and even Colin McRea DiRT titles have been dominating the more arcade-style games. All great for motorsport fans, but terrible for EA’s flagship car title.

Well, with a new development crew involved and lots of enthusiasm from fans, we’re now looking at two Need For Speed titles that look like they might actually be worth buying this year (September). If you didn’t already know the title, I bet you’d be all over what’s contained in this trailer:

With 18 confirmed tracks and 65 cars, this game is going to be pretty epic. No doubt it’ll be the first iteration of the series rehash, so there’ll be a lot more of NFS “in the right direction” to follow.

To top that news, EA confirmed a new online title, akin to Battlefield Heroes. A free MMO accessed via your browser, this will be using the NFS moniker too; NFS: World Online.
The game offers numerous race tracks and game modes where players are able to form teams to take on the competition and the police. Players can collect and customize racing characters alongside authentic real-world licensed cars and will be able to track their progress via online leaderboards, all in the largest free roaming environment in Need for Speed history. Need for Speed World Online is a new entertainment experience that delivers excellent gameplay, stunning graphics and sophisticated online matchmaking features that emphasize social interaction between players.

Trailer:

2009 is looking like a good year for NFS. The only question is if it can withhold the attacks from Gran Turismo, Forza 3 and DiRT 2!
