Nintendo can’t make good games

Or so says Nintendo of America president, Regie Fils-Aime. The ever delightful Regie reckons Nintendo are good at making specific types of games, but use third parties to fill the gaps in development that the company leaves. These, in most peoples opinions, would be huge gaps… and third parties don’t really fill them. Especially considering the example title he uses, and the lack of anything resembling them on either DS or Wii.

“The fact of the matter is we know we create great content for younger consumers, we know we’ve got great content for more casual players, and we want fantastic content for that more active player who loves Metroid or Zelda but maybe also wants something like a BioShock 2 to play as well,” says Regie. “And we also recognise that we don’t create that type of content ourselves. We’re not good at it and it’s not a key focus area. So we want that content on our platform, so we have to court third-party developers and encourage them to make [those games], but it also has to be financially viable for them as well.”

So what to take from this? Nintendo sucks at making Bioshock 2. That, or maybe Nintendo are going to focus a bit more on garnishing the third parties with love and attention in future, making them create new franchises and port existing ones onto whatever Nintendo do next (hint: Wii 2).

  1. I’d hate for the likes of Bioshock, Uncharted and Assasins Creed to be on the Wii. It just would’nt feel right.

While there are a LOT of third party games for the Wii and DS, there are loads of fantastic games, even more so than the other publishers. But gamers forget the likes of Mario Galaxy and TWEWY and choose to think of stuff like My Little Pony and Hannah Montana!!!

  2. The problem is that Nintendo market themselves after the same crowd who buy Hannah Montana and hair & makeup titles on Wii. Not attractive to developers. Sure, EA and the lot publish crap on the Wii and DS. This is because there’s a market for it and they don’t care about the content. Hannah Montana fans don’t know what texture warping is… so the quality control is significantly lessened too… not helping to raise a new youth filled with gaming culture references.
