Playstation 3 hacked
After more then 3 years since release, finally someone appears to have unlocked access to the PS3′s internal systems, including full control of the cell processor. This, without the aid of a mod chip inside too.
George Hotz is known as the man behind the first iPhone hack, and has now claimed full read/write system access to the PS3. His claims, if true, will herald a new era of homebrew on the PS3 which could mean a lot of exciting new applications on the systems horizon. However, it could also herald a new era of piracy which could have lasting damaging effects on the industry as it will effectively mean each system on the market is hackable and titles are downloadable without payment.
This exploit supposedly “isn’t really patchable, but they can make implementations much harder,” meaning George isn’t releasing anything just yet, because once he does it’s likely to strike a new firmware update war, akin to the PSP.

I suppose it was inevitable, I still think it's impressive how pirate proof the ps3 has been but perhaps that was partly due to it not having as big a market as the DS/360/Wii.
I'd say with online gaming and DLC etc it's going to be harder to play pirated games anyway and I'm sure they can patch any issues quickly enough, they've tried to keep up with that on the PSP too.
I dunno about that. The PS3 has a huge wealth of power waiting to be tapped into so hackers have been at this for a long time.
The PSP doesn't allow hackers to play online and use PSN (afaik) so it'll be the same deal with the PS3, if not worse. It wouldn't surprise me if they have a means of nuking a PS3 until it updates to new firmware. Time to go zero tolerance to avoid mass piracy.
I had wondered if this was why they removed the Install Other OS option from the Slim, was that the backdoor way of rooting the PS3.
So the exploit has been released but it's not something the average joe will be able to take advantage of.
It requires a slight hardware mod, to get the exploit, but this might lead the way to other pure software hacks.
From what I've read the exploit needs the OtherOS feature, which maybe why Sony removed this for the slim.
not interested in hacking my ps3. sony will just block you from psn which is half the point
me either but plenty folk wont care about not using PSN.
