Portal update alludes to Episode 3?

Do not get confused by that post title. I am making a bold statement but piecing together the recent update from Portal, it appears we could be looking at the first hints at Half Life 2: Episode 3. The “final” episodic piece in the HL2 saga that was meant to bring monthly episodes, all those years ago.

The update officially goes like this: “Changed radio transmission frequency to comply with federal and state spectrum management regulations.” A new achievement is to be unlocked too, called “Transmission Received” which goes undescribed by the developer, but involves the use of Portal’s in-game radios.

New sound files have been added to the title, all with a prefix of “Dinosaur”. They also include a lot of morse code, which of course, the community has been trying to interpret and read into.

This is the original audio:

This is the morse code:

And here is the translation of the morse code:

interior transmission active

External data line active

Message digest active

The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog

System data dump active

User back up active

Password back up active

Beep beep beep beep lol

The cleaned up audio can be attained here, which, although the words are entirely not understandable, are very recognisable as Kliener and Barney.

There’s actually a gameplay update to this, not just the files. Every stage appears to have at least one radio in it, and moving it to a certain spot in that stage makes a light in the radio go green, one of the transmission files plays, and you complete one of the 26 parts to this mysterious achievement. The current list of radio locations found so far are on the steampowered forums.

The radio sounds also have images attached, including their prefix “dino” I mentioned earlier, all are available here!

If more comes of this, we’ll let you know. Either way, it appears EP3 could be coming, and GLadOS is alive.
