Sam and Max: Beyond time and space Review
So here it is the the review you’ve been waiting for.
When Kev sent me this game to review I was like ”Great I’ll review this game I never heard of while you get stuck into your special edition of Uncharted 2” but to be honest I nearly enjoyed this game as much as I did Naughty Dogs latest opus. Few games have given me such big laugh out moments and if you don’t splash out the 1600 points I would recommend taking a looks at some of the gags on YouTube.
Split into 5 episodes Sam and Max beyond time and space is an old school point and click adventure title brought roaring onto the Xbox Live. You play as budding detectives Sam and Max as they battle against such perilous foes as…Santa claus and even better – Disco Zombies. This ”2nd season” brings all the instalments of Tell Tale games Sam and Max season 2 into one downloadable package and explains the steep 1600 points it costs on marketplace.
This title has a lot of stuff going for it particularly for fans of Monkey Island and Grim Fandango who like their adventures with a side of bizarre humour. In fact for the most part the point and click aspect of the game is the weakest with only occasional puzzles causing any major trouble. Its the quality of the gags that really makes this stand out from the crowd, hearing some one describe Santa as a bloated fat pagan god was one of my highlights of which there were many. Episodes can be played in sequence or if you’re like me and you wanted to see the Easter island mission first you can play in any order you choose. I’m a fan of this kind of open ended presentation if only because it reminds me of Gunstar Heroes.
So what’s the bad?
The Xbox Controller is not the ideal solution for this kind of game as no matter how high you turn up the movement speed it always feels clunky and slow while navigating the story. The soundtrack is in my opinion stunning but it drove my girlfriend mad, its Jazzy undertones help set the mood for the Film Noir meets Sponge Bob Square Pants visuals and story.
So is it worth travelling to the North Pole to Hell and back with Sam and Max? Most definitely
The price may be a little high for some but if old school game play mixed with some new school mini games isn’t your thing then the snappy dialogue and creative story will get you I promise. It’s a no brainer for fans of the last season but be comfortable in the fact that it isn’t necessary to have played the last episodes to get enjoyment from the game. I know I did.

The cartoon was great, and yeah the price seems high, I thought perhaps these old school point and click games would only appear on platforms like iPhone and for a couple of quid only.
Beneath a Steel Sky is one such classic re-released recently and I hope it comes out as a PSP mini, though I know you can play it on ScummVM.
